Glogster EDU

glogster.png

Glogster EDU is a free web 2.0 tool and a subset of the Glogster site. It provides students and teachers with the opportunity to create interactive on-line posters. The posters are called glogs and can include images, audio, video and more (see features). This web 2.0 tool is best suited to students from middle primary onwards and can be used for work in a range of subject areas.

We have graded the Glogster EDU web 2.0 tool with three and half stars out of five, for the reason that whilst we value its modern and interactive approach in allowing students and educators to present their work, we have reservations about the potential challenges/barriers.

What is Glogster EDU?

Glogster EDU is a free web 2.0 tool that does not require any software instalation. It allows teachers to set up private Glogster EDU accounts for all of their students. Students and teachers can use these accounts to create interactive on-line posters (glogs) which the rest of the class can view. All the student accounts are connected to each other and to the teachers account, however no one else can access them. This creates a safe environment for students to work. Students can also use their accounts to comment on other students glogs and to send messages to each other and to the teacher.

What are the benefits of Glogster EDU in the classroom?

Glogster EDU has the potential to be used effectively in a variety of classroom situations. Below outlines a range of benefits for the three vital categories within the school environment, the students, the teacher and the overall classroom.

The clip to the right highlights some of the benefits of glogs over traditional poster making

Student benefits:

  • A unique and new way for students to express their creativity/knowledge and share it with others.
  • Fosters collaboration and teamwork with fellow peers through the ability to communicate and share work online.
  • Provides students with opportunities to intergrate dynamic multisensory learning experiences.
  • Potentially increases the motivation of students towards a specific topic/learning area.

Teacher benefits:

  • Can create individual student accounts providing students with a sense of independence and responsibility
  • Can access/view all students accounts allowing teachers to monitor progress, understanding and attitudes towards the topic/learning experience

Classroom benefits:

  • Students are able to access the Glogster EDU account from any computer/network (with internet access), meaning that students who are absent can still work on their accounts if needed.

Examples of how Glogster EDU could be used in the classroom?

Glogster can be used in many diverse ways within the classroom. The following are a few examples:

Presentation of student understanding

For example if a group of high school students had been investigating the effect of drugs on both individuals and their communities they could present their findings in a glog. This glog could include:

  • Factual information in the form of text
  • A role play on an issue such as 'how to say no to drugs' (this could be filmed and attached)
  • An interview with a person within this field (this could be attached as an audio file)
  • Graphics and images relating to the issue can also be found, edited and attached

(Furthermore, this specific example would cover a range of cross curricular ideas, such as health, drama and media studies)

Incorporating self and peer assesment

Students could be asked to assess and reflect on their own work and ideas as well as the work/ideas of their fellow peers. This could be completed using the comments section of the Glogster EDU site.

Providing a greater information base to students

Teachers could use the glogs to provide information about subject matters, topics and themes. This could further be enhanced by attaching links to relevant sites and information sources.

What are the potential challenges and barriers?

Whilst Glogster EDU provides opportunities for students and their teacher to share a range of work, ideas and graphics it is vital that the potential challenges and barriers be discussed in order to allow fellow educators the opportunity to assess the tool with realistic expectations.

Teacher control

  • Students have the power to change their passwords therefore, removing teacher control.
  • Teachers are able to access and remove any inappropriate material once they are made aware of it, if the have the current password. However, they are unable to stop such content prior to it being published.
  • We are unsure if students are able to change their usernames potentially meaning the teacher is unable to identify individual students.

Personal information

  • The Glogster EDU site provides opportunities for students to utilise a status/profile feature. This profile and 'G point' system provides a sense of social networking which may encourage distraction from the task and potentially bullying.

Suggested Strategies to overcome potential challenges

  • The Glogster EDU administrators are highly responsive to questions and feeback. We suggest that if you have any comments, questions or quiries relating to the above potential challenges/barriers or others that you encounter you contact them via the email link on the Glogster EDU homepage.

The examples provided above were created by us or found online as we were unable to identify any current educators using Glogster EDU within their classroom. This may be as a result of Glogster EDU being a relatively new web 2.0 tool. It is for this reason that we would like to encourage any educators using Glogster EDU within their classroom to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas on this page for others to see.

Hey everyone, I recently recieved an email from Glogster EDU reguarding a new version which will soon be available. The new version addresses some of the issue we raised such as increasing teacher control over student actions.

From cole0189 - 11/14/09 11:24 PM

Hey Melissa & Nicole, it seems you have a very popular page to comment on, so I may as well join in the fun!  I really enjoyed your presentation and this page is effectively designed and certainly grabs the readers attention.

The only suggestion I have for improvement relates to the examples of use within the classroom, but as it is such a new tool I can understand why there are not many teachers using this in practice.  Maybe this will be a feature of future updates to your page, as more and more teachers learn about how great the tool is to engage their students.

My thoughts for overcoming some of the limitations of this tool which you clearly point out, relate to an idea about drawing up a 'Contract' which is signed by the teacher, parent/ guardian/ care-giver to diminish off task behaviour & misuse of the tool.  Well that's all from me, great job.

From osha0016 - 11/13/09 11:00 AM

I had never heard of this tool before, so when it came time to choose one I thought this would be a fun one to look at. Sadly you beat me to it. So it was with much anticipation that I looked through your web page. It it very informative and well set out. Maybe a few more example of how we could use it in the classroom, topics and so on. But overall pretty good.

I also enjoyed the presentaion on your tool. Glogster looks like it would fun to teach and learn. There are a lot of possibilities and while ther are some issues with login and passwords, I think that using Glogster once or twice in a year would engage students. I enjoyed all aspects well done!

From beag0008 - 11/9/09 2:37 PM

I just found this link that suggests ways it can be used in the classroom - there are linked examples on this page too e.g. 'assignment sheet' as a glog, providing lots of maths links

From tsweeney - 11/7/09 6:06 PM

Thank you Melissa and Nicole for adding this page. Edu Glogster appears to have potential but I agree that teachers would need to use it wisely. I was unable to play the video and audio in your glog. Perhaps this is another challenge.

From lipc0003 - 11/6/09 2:51 PM

This page is really well structured and easy to follow. Perhaps another way this tool could be used is as a way of pulling together the final products of students work with other ICT tools. An example of this could be the production of a Glog as an amalgamation of an integrated unit of work. This could potentially be a dynamic and new way of using of the tool and may help to move away from simply assembling a traditional-style poster online. It will be great to see some of the work being produced by students as this tool becomes used more widely.

From quin0115 - 11/6/09 10:29 AM

Glogster looks really cool, I think that it would a great tool to use with middle school students. I am concerned that students can change their own passwords, is there anyway that Glogster can change that?

From powe0144 - 11/6/09 9:28 AM

I found another interesting video about Glogster EDU that might be of interest

From broc0045 - 10/25/09 2:31 PM

I introduced Glogster to my 5 year old and with some scaffolding he was interested and adapted his computer skills to enable the creation of a poster. He did however insist that I print it out for him. In his reception class and at home he uses the very popular Kids Pix along with word processing and games.

From beag0008 - 10/23/09 8:12 PM

I love that you have written the features of Glogster EDU and also shown them in a glog along side Smile
