Having provided the theoretical background on the use of Google Earth in the classroom, we also wanted to discover how current educators are actually using the tool in their classroom. Therefore, we took the opportunity to conduct an Interview with Marty Coombe, a Middle School Teacher at Scotch College Adelaide (on 08/09/09).
The key questions we asked were:
Can you describe how you have used Google Earth in your classroom?
What does Google Earth offer that is so special?
Is this tool useful across a range of year levels?
Have you encountered any particular problems whilst using Google Earth?
Can you recommend any further resources that teachers new to Google Earth might find helpful in trying to make the most effective use of the tool?
During the interview Marty offered an intriguing insight into how he has used Google Earth with a Year 7 SOSE class. He also stressed that Google Earth can be used as a tool to enhance the learning experience for students across a range of year levels within the general classroom. Marty clearly identifies a number of issues that arise when attempting to incorporate this tool effectively within the classroom (which we will discuss further on the next page. We strongly encourage you to view the brief interview below to find out more...
