So, who should be doing the learning?
Schools are seen as the learning hub in any community. The focus of schools is learning and historically it has been on the teacher informing and engaging their students within the confines of the classroom walls. With the explosion in the use of ICT tools and the internet in education, our students now have the opportunity for learning far beyond the classroom walls and in a myriad of engaging ways. So why are our teachers often reluctant to take on these opportunities to engage and further explore learning for our students? So who should be doing the learning and how can we get teachers to engage in it? A look at some strategies to engage teachers and schools so our classrooms are all about learning for everyone inside them.

A PERSONAL STORY: Learning about, with and from technology
I have learned a lot since 1990 when I introduced compulsory personal notebook computers into a school. Some of the lessons were hard, some took a long time to understand and some I am yet to learn. While we had great teachers like Seymour Papert who kept our focus on the learning, it was hard not to be caught up in the whiz of the technology. The challenges of 1990 continue in 2009 as again we have new technology that offers promise yet uncertainty. Dare we introduce new technology or should we wait for others to do this first? Is one of the lessons to be learned that we can no longer work independently as we cannot master all the knowledge, or all the technology.

Learning 'virtually' everywhere
The maturation of the internet, abundance of information is giving learning a new level of mobility in and out of the classroom. Educators are no longer the gatekeepers of information and students know it. Being information literate means more than 'using' technology, but constructing meaning from it. The 3Rs 'reading, writing and arithmetic', the capstones of 'good learning' remain valid, but we need to realign them, as the 3Rs of student motivation are 'realism, relevance and retention'. How can we re-align curricula though outcomes, activities and assessment? Is technology the cure or the virus? If we can learn virtually anywhere - why is school still the best place to do it?

Digging up diggers: Using web resources to uncover ANZAC Day / Remembrance Day
So much of our Australian Military history is being unearthed on the web. This presentation will look at online resources such as databases, diaries, blogs and information sites, including the new Mapping our ANZACs (National Archives of Australia) site. Students now have access to primary source material; they can read the diggers own words, view photographs and artifacts, dabble in a bit of genealogy, or research old scholars or a name from the local war memorial.

This presentation describes how this was achieved for an inquiry learning unit for Year 1/2 students on 'Fair Play'. The unit investigated unfair work by children in our world today and what that might mean for us as consumers. The challenge of using the IWB to incorporate visual literacies will be discussed.

Mega Trends in Emerging Learning Technologies
This presentation looks at the reality of predictions from the New Media Consortium in the 5 years from 2004 to 2008 and the three mega trends that have emerged. It is a future that is proffered by 3D interfaces, virtual worlds and large scale multiuser gaming environments. SecondLife is but one example of a virtual world that despite all its adverse publicity offers a possible glimpse into the future where Learning Management Systems, such as Moodle are integrated into a virtual world to produce a new entity, SLOODLE. The result is not so much a hybrid system but a glimpse of new and emerging pedagogical and methodological approaches in education, with its own new set of challenges.
