How does it work?

Smart Kiddies Mathematics is a program that can be used in the classroom and at home. Smart Kiddies allows unrestricted access to its programs during school hours and students have homework mode access to two lessons per day from their own homes.

Teachers:

Teachers are given a teachers admin system. This has two main sections: teaching resources and the student learning program. These are managed and controlled through the teacher’s admin. Access for students is easy and class logins can easily be allocated and personalised via the teachers admin system. Individual tasks can be given to students who are working at different levels and student activities are automatically marked and graded and results reported back to the teacher.

Students:

Students are given there own personal profile and every student has their own character, this helps make mathematics fun. They can alter their character at anytime.Logins are allocated via the teacher and signing in from home or at school is easy. Each student page is colourful and their pages can contain set tasks, messages from the teacher, results and rewards.

Completing activities gives students BONUS points that can be spent in the virtual rewards rooms. This makes mathematics FUN and rewarding. Every correct answer earns reward points for each student.

How can it be used in classroom?

Smart Kiddies can be used in collaboration with the mathematics topics that are being covered in the classroom. As Smart Kiddies was developed by experienced teachers, it provides a wide range of online mathematical activities that are relevant to the topics that are being taught in Australian primary schools.

Students also have the option of reinforcing their learning by accessing activities and tasks online at home.

For example, a teacher may introduce the mathematical concept of ordinal numbers in the classroom, and then for homework he/she could set at a task using the teacher's admin section on smart kiddies and assign the corresponding ordinal numbers activity for the students to attempt at home.

Disadvantages

The program has the potential to be abused by teachers who may become ‘lazy’ and reliant on it for last minute math lessons. Although Smart Kiddies is a great teaching tool and resource, it should not be used as a substitute for traditional one on one mathematics lessons.

Teachers need to be aware that the program does not replace the skills that are learnt in the classroom rather it helps students to develop their skills further by allowing them to learn in a more interactive and child friendly environment.

Teacher Interview

"As a teacher, I find Smartkiddies invaluable both in the classroom and for children to use at home. The clear way in which the activities are produced quickly gains the interest of the students. I use Smartkiddies as one way in which to help ensure that key Mathematical concepts are grasped by children with different learning styles and abilities. It clearly caters for a variety of individual needs in the class..." Mr R.B - Teacher

"Smartkiddies is a very, very worthwhile program. It is easy to follow. It is eye catching with great colours and pictures. The children can be assessed and evaluations made as to where they can improve. It is a very positive program that I would recommend to anyone... Mrs J.M - Teacher

"Thanks for a wonderful site! Among all the sites I have bookmarked in the last 4 months this is clearly the best, (and I have bookmarked over 100 carefully selected maths-sites). What makes Smartkiddies stand out is the full fledge curriculum system you are providing along with assessments for every progress and a very pedagogical way of presenting the activities. Along with the inexpensive one year price tag, this makes your site my choice number one! What is most important, my daughter loves the activities and keeps asking me to look up Smartkiddies for her. Once again, thanks for your unique service!" Anonoymous Father

Thank you Amy for adding this page to the CEGSA website. I really like the Smart Kiddies website and believe that it has potential to enhance student learning and provide motivation. However, I agree with you that there is a danger that it may be used as a replacement to hands-on interactive mathematics activities. You have provided an informative introductory page. It would be good to find out what other readers think about their experience using Smart Kiddies.
