Digital Stories can generally be divided into three categories

Personal Narrative
we learn about the creator, their hardships and cultural differences
Examination of a historical event
creating a digital story that examines a historical event e.g. The ANZACs, Captain Cook's landing
Stories that Inform or Instruct
these are stories that specifically created to explain how something is done

Storytelling and new media narrative
This site has information about the different types of literacy (Digital, Art, Oral, Written) that are involved in digital storytelling. There are also some texts for purchase, but there is plenty of information on the site.
