About Links to Teaching Pedagogies Opinions Pros and Cons Evaluation Moshi Monsters is a great social interactive website. Even though Moshi Monsters provides some educational value, it struggles to justify itself. It combines education into the site well, though that is not the emphasis. To get the most out of Moshi Monsters, you have to login every day, otherwise your Monster becomes angry. This would be very confronting to young users, and not a valuable experience. There are additional fun functions, such as saving and spending your won “Rox” on your Monster’s room and on food. The Monster relies on food, so the object of the program loses focus on the education. The child NEEDS to feed their Monster, so the puzzles become secondary to maintaining their status. Additionally, Moshi Monsters does not cater to a particular curriculum or teaching pedagogies. This means that although there are slight benefits to using this web 2.0 tool to engage interest in learning, it does not serve any other higher order purpose. I had not used this program until the assignment, and I am glad to learn of its' advantages, however parents and teachers need to weigh up whether this would be the most appropriate tool for use in the home or classroom. On reflection, I would not use Moshi Monsters as a teaching tool. I would more likely use it as an incentive for fast finishers. In this way, students would still be learning in an imaginative and stimulating way. Last Modified 11/11/08 5:40 PM | Hide Tools |
