What is Moshi Monsters?

Moshi Monsters is a interactive social web 2.0 tool that enables children to learn about literacy and numeracy in an engaging manner. This is achieved by users creating an account, creating a personalised monster and exploring the Moshi Monsters world. It is fun and relatively easy to use, however, time must be spent in exploring the Moshi Monsters world otherwise its full capacity is not realised.

nMoshi Monsters utilises educational content, through vocabulary and arithmetic to logic and spatial skills. Moshi Monsters has been designed to be a “fun, safe and educational” (www.moshimonsters.com/parents) website for all age groups. This educational value of Moshi Monsters is achieved through the fun games available on the Puzzle Palace webpage.

Well done Kristen. This page alerts teachers to the limitations of Moshi Monsters as a tool to enhance student learning outcomes. I am sure that young students will find Moshi Monsters very engaging and entertaining and that teachers could find ways to integrate it into play time, as a reward for class cooperation and/or asa virtual classroom pet. However, I am concerned that there is a strong marketing link to merchandise and that children are encouraged to be online everyday to keep their monster happy. Still, it seems to be a safe virtual world superior to many places and it is free.
