What is a Podcast?

A podcast is a digital media file or collection of files that is distributed over the internet. The files can be played back on a computer or personal player (e.g. an Ipod). This is often called podcasting.

 What is Gcast?

GCast is a free podcasting platform which integrated the GarageBand.com digital music library. Podcasts can be uploaded by phone as an international call, although we suggest using Audacity, Skype or a similar program to save on the call cost. Alternatively you can upload your podcast directly from your computer via a microphone.

free editing software

In order to upload audio through Audacity, we suggest initializing by using a simple set up that can be found on the Audacity site through this link here. This should avoid any problems that may arise due to incorrect format (i.e. not being in Mp3 format).

Applications within the Classroom

  • Primary

  • Special Needs

Creating a podcast allows students to share learning experiences.

Podcasts can be created from original material by students and teachers or existing audio files can be downloaded for classroom use.

It provides students with a world-wide audience that makes learning meaningful and assessment authentic.

Teachers can use the technology to provide additional and revision material for students to download and review at a time that suits them.

The flexibility that such time-shifting offers makes podcasting a valuable educational tool.

  • When the podcasts are uploaded by phone, it’s charged as an international call. This is common as they have been created for American users. Using Skype saves on the call cost, but you’ll need a microphone

    Tips and Tricks Questions:

In order to clarify some features of G-Cast, we have contacted the service dept. with the following query and are awaiting a reply:

    Hi,

Just a few quick questions as stated in the subject heading. My self and two collegues are investigating the possiblity of Gcast for use in schools for podcasting in South Australia (CEGSA). My questions are:

    1. Can you delete an account after you register?

    2. Can you delete podcasts that have been uploaded to GCast (ie on the master list)?

    3. Is there any other way to not have to create individual playlists if you only want 1 podcast to play from a single playlist when embeded on a web site?

    Thankyou.

    Reply:

Thank you for contacting GarageBand Support.

Yes if you chose to you can request account deletion at any time.
~I would need the email address, screen name and password for
the account you would like removed? Please note: GarageBand/Gcast
account deletions will also remove your registration at our sister site
    iLike.com

you can remove both published posts in your podcast
~If you wish to remove a post from your podcast please go to
your Podcast click on the title. You will then need to scroll down to
where you see 'delete post'. Please do this for all entries you want
    removed

As well as from your master playlist and other playlists
~For removing from your playlists you will use your Playlist
Manager to remove songs from your master playlist but you must have more
than one playlist created for this function to work.

    Podcast Files
~They can be moved from either your master playlist or another
playlist into your podcast channel. If you record by phone you can send the file directly to the podcast channel. We created playlists to help you organize your files so they are necessary for the site

    Thank you,
    Jennifer Carafelli

I enjoyed browsing through your webpage, and even more so having fun in your workshop. What I particularly liked about your website, was the number of links to educational uses that GCast, and podcasting in general can have. It has deepened my understanding of the tool and i can see myself referring back to this page in the future  when I am inclined to teach it.

    Thanks guys. :)

I think this page needs an introduction that explains that GCast is a web 2.0 tool used to host and broadcast a podcast (think audio file similar to a radio broadcast although podcasts can also include video). The blurb on the web 2.0 page could be used. The GCast video probably needs to move to the top of the page to explain the tool.

This page directs the reader to some valuable podcasting resources and examples. GCast is just one example of a podcasting host that is available free to the public. KidsCast is a free podcasting host that is just for kids and is closely monitored to ensure content is safe and appropriate for children. I particularly love Radio Willow Web as an excellent example of classroom applications of podcasting.

Here is a handout developed by Karen Riemsdyk that attempts to explain step by step instructions about how to upload an Audacity file to GCast.

The email letter and response under the tips and tricks section was an attempt to point out that finding out how delete your GCast content and account is something that is not obviousbut can be achieved.

CEGSA members are invited to edit this page e.g. to add information aboutthe various podcatching tools that are available.

This website is great. Simple, easy to follow and understand. Very informative about how I can use this tool in the clasroom. I knew about the tool but hadn't really thought of how it can be used to enhance students learning. Thanks!

What a fantastic Web 2.0 tool - I can really see the benefits of this tool and how it can easily be integrated into many areas of the curriculum. Thanks for the informative web page!
